Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
