The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
