Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
